Since 2010, The Old Market has been owned and managed by Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell. Local residents, the pair are creators and directors of the global hit show STOMP. In fact, The Old Market played a key role in STOMP’s conception; it was the very first place Steve and Luke worked together.
Upgrades & Refurbishment:
In order to create a venue comfortable for audiences and suitable for performers, Steve and Luke invested in various upgrades to the building’s interior. A lighting rig was tucked above our Main House’s original wooden beams, an automated ‘raked’ seating unit installed to improve audience viewpoints, and the bar refurbished as a brighter and more inviting space.
Refreshed and fit for purpose, The Old Market reopened in May 2011. To reflect its new lease of life, we christened it with the new nickname, TOM.
Critical to our early success has been quality programming. Whilst diverse, we have taken great care – not to mention significant energy – to bring the best possible shows to The Old Market.
To name but handful, we are proud to have staged… THEATRE: 1927’s The Animals and Children Took To The Streets, internationally-acclaimed mind-boggler LEO, Spymonkey, Action to the Word’s A Clockwork Orange, The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey, Les Enfants Terribles; MUSIC: Django Django, White Mink: Electro Swing Speakeasy, Ginger Baker, Alice Russell, Villagers, British Sea Power and Cerys Matthews; COMEDY: Michael McIntyre, Miranda, Daniel Kitson, Susan Calman, Julian Clary, Seann Walsh, Paul Merton; AND ALSO: Sky Arts, Brighton Festival, Brighton Fringe, Brighton Comedy Festival, Brighton Digital Festival, SICK! Festival here at TOM. Fond memories are a pleasure matched only by our hunger for more!
To date, we’ve welcomed well over 200,000 visitors to TOM.
