Before the Festivals begin, this April we’re proud to announce our first ever THE OLD MARKET PRESENTS, celebrating incredible local musical talent. This time NORMANTON STREET headline, joined by Time For T, Jouis and Yonaka. In the same week, four incredible rappers / poets / beatboxers / musicians come together for GHOST LIGHTS: DIZRAELI, REEPS ONE, BELLATRIX & REX DOMINO, unique and sure to be stunning!
Our theatre programme begins with Show And Tell’s charming STANDBY FOR TAPE BACK-UP [pic, above], where Ross Sutherland attempts to piece together his grandad’s entire life story through old video takes. There’s also Mark Ravenhill’s Hollywood thriller PRODUCT starring Olivia Poulet [The Thick Of It] at the end of April.
The Old Market operates all year-round, but May festivals are a particularly special time for us. This year we have shows from BRIGHTON FESTIVAL, guest directed by Ali Smith, BRIGHTON FRINGE, England’s largest arts festival, THE GREAT ESCAPE, Europe’s leading festival for new music, and we’re exhibiting work by ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES’ cover artist.
The Brighton Fringe 2014 Award for Excellence [chosen from performances at Edinburgh Fringe] went to LORRAINE & ALAN, and we’re hosting two performances of this delightful show here in Hove. A modern re-telling of the Selkie myth, it fuses sound design, song and several hundred plastic bottles to create a lo-fi, thoroughly engaging theatrical experience. A highlight of our Fringe music programme is smooth jazz vocalist JARROD LAWSON, whose London dates have already sold out, making his appearance at The Old Market a hot ticket. And singing Nina Simone, Apphia Campbell’s acclaimed BLACK IS THE COLOR OF MY VOICE [pic, above] will be a theatrical, musical treat.
Comedy fans will be glad to know that FESTIVAL OF THE SPOKEN NERD and GO 8 BIT! are returning for a geeky comedy double-bill following acclaimed individual performances last year. They’re ideal for curious minds! Headlining this month’s LAUGHTERMARKET is BBC-regular Paul McCaffrey, who will be joined by an as-ever stonking line up of stand-up acts. Plus, SIMON EVANS trials a brand new show here in TOM’s Bar.
Within both Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe, family audiences are well catered for at The Old Market. JAMES CAMPBELL’S COMEDY 4 KIDS returns for a fourth year, undoubtedly to the delight of his fans (both young and grown-up!) Firm local favourites Al Start and Nicola Bloom also return, this time with THREE EXCELLENT LITTLE PIGS, featuring handmade puppets, audience participation and cheeky storytelling.
Our programme even expands beyond festivals. Widely regarded as one of the best, and friendliest, club nights around, THE CRAIG CHARLES FUNK AND SOUL SHOW comes to The Old Market for the first time this May. We’re also hosting the 12th Annual VERSES VERSUS VERSES: BRIGHTON V LONDON POETS V MCS featuring freestyling funkateers, The Spoken Herd. Brilliant burlesque and cabaret from HUNDRED WATT CLUB returns to The Old Market for a second outing, with more to come. We’re also pleased to welcome progressive heavy rock legends URIAH HEEP.
See you here this April & May!
