BLOG: New Work In Development This Summer

From a fizzling Shakespeare adaptation to an immersive Oculus Rift performance, there’s loads in creation here at The Old Market this Summer. We’re opening our doors to numerous companies, artists and performers, providing them with space to develop new work.

You’ll be able to see exclusive previews at various stages, or book now to see final performances in our Autumn Season. Here’s a summary of what’s going on:

LIVE PREVIEWS: Throughout June & July [FREE!]
A firm Summer favourite, throughout June and July, we’re once again inviting great comedy acts to showcase the best they’ve got before heading up North to the Festival Fringe. All awaits them: packed houses; showers of awards; TV fame… But for now, all they aspire to achieve is your laughter.

Toilers of the Sea
LIVE PREVIEW: Friday 26 June [Just £5]
Inspired by traditional folk music from the British Isles, Toilers of the Sea is a new original musical based on the epic novel by Victor Hugo. The showing will be a staged read/sing-through of the show, a culmination of a development workshop hosted by The Old Market.

Romeo & Juliet
SEE IT: 23-24 September [Now Booking]
In August 2013, New Mutiny stormed Edinburgh Fringe with this explosive one hour production. The Times called it a “fizzling adaptation… Shakespeare for the OMG generation? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes, when it is as good as this,” awarding it a highly-coveted ★★★★★’s!

This Summer New Mutiny are spending some time with us to develop Romeo & Juliet further and prepare the show for touring. It’s a truly magical introduction to Shakespeare for children, schools, and families, ideal for ages 5-12. Book Now, and stay tuned for updates too.


The Cube
SEE IT: September 2015 [Brighton Digital Festival]
Circa69 is working with Amoeba Design and Amsterdam Film Academy on a new theatre piece for the Oculus Rift virtual reality platform. Here at The Old Market we got to experience a trial of The Cube last week; it completely blew us away – incredibly immersive and deftly crafted. We can’t wait to share it with you this September, as part of our Brighton Digital Festival line-up.

The work is funded by Arts Council England and LDD Research Group with additional support from Cambridge Junction.


The Old Market Presents

Last but not least, we’re also platforming another set of incredible local musical talents in July’s The Old Market Presents. On the bill are blues-rock psyche-soul artist/producer Z-Star [Best Live Act, Brighton Music Awards], eclectic instrumentalists with jazz and progressive influences VELS TRIO and South African born singer/songwriter ANNACA, plus more to come.

Having filmed recording sessions with more than 200 musicians in over 20 countries worldwide, Addictive TV bring their incredible musical compendium ORCHESTRA OF SAMPLES [04 JUL] to Hove. Fusing all manner of instruments and styles, the show creates a virtual supergroup of international artists who’ve never met, but play together on screen.

Following an amazing initial reception for its Spring debut, we’ve another THE OLD MARKET PRESENTS [29 JUL], again presenting a phenomenal line-up of local bands; VELS TRIO, ANNACA + more TBA.

Returning to us for a fourth year, with an increasing bank of accolades to its name, Brighton & Hove Big Band are this year joined by Brighton & Hove Youth String Ensemble for their SUMMER SOUNDS [14 JUL] concert.

Lizzie Franks and Philippa Herrick, in association with The Production Exchange, will be presenting a staged read/sing- through of a brand new musical based on the epic novel by Victor Hugo, TOILERS OF THE SEA [26 JUN].

Take the Space [who brought us STELLA: A Story Of Women, Their Men and Astronomy for Brighton Fringe 2013], are inviting stories and contributions for a new project in their WHITE FEATHER BOXER SYMPOSIUM [29 JUN].

NEWS: Your Chance To Play Live With The Orchestra Of Samples

Ahead of their performance of Orchestra Of Samples this July, Addictive TV’s Graham Daniels and Mark Vidler are inviting contributions from talented musicians.

Orchestra Of Samples is a unique project based on sampling recording sessions filmed with more than 200 musicians around the world, creating a digital supergroup of international artists who have never met.

If you’d like to record a sample to join the global Orchestra Of Samples archive and also play live with Addictive TV at The Old Market on 04 July, here’s what you do:

Send a video clip of yourself singing or playing any musical instrument to: Addictive TV will select the best musician and record a sample of you performing. This sample video will then be added to the global archive of Orchestra of Samples videos [for possible use in the future.]

In addition, Graham and Mark will choose one number from their live set to be performed at The Old Market on 04 July, and invite you to join them on-stage and accompany them playing the track live on the night.
